What is the Peppol network?

Peppol solves a connection problem: without it, exchanging electronic invoices with a partner means agreeing on a channel with them, one at a time. On Peppol, every business publishes its identifier in a directory, and any other participant can reach it — the model is closer to email than to a private link.

The network reaches well beyond France: it is the de facto standard in Belgium, the Netherlands, and the Nordic countries. For a French SME with suppliers or customers in those countries, exchanges will often run over Peppol, alongside the domestic French system.

In Odoo

Odoo is connected to the Peppol network: registering the business in the directory and sending documents are both done from the invoicing settings.

Once registered, a business becomes reachable — including by suppliers who never gave notice. That is the whole point, but it means receiving has to be configured and monitored, not just sending.

Common mistakes

• Mistaking it for a file format: Peppol is a network, and it carries formats such as UBL or Factur-X.
• Registering to send while not processing the invoices that start arriving.
• Assuming the French domestic system removes the need for Peppol when partners are Belgian or Dutch.
