GlossaryClose & accounts

What is a financial year (exercice comptable) in France?

The financial year is the period over which a business measures its activity and closes its accounts. It runs for twelve months, without having to align with the calendar year.

In practice, in France

The closing date is chosen at incorporation and stated in the company’s articles of association. Many businesses align their financial year with the calendar year, but nothing requires it — a seasonal business often benefits from closing during a quiet spell, when stock is low and third-party accounts are thin.

Two financial years escape the standard-length rule. The first can run shorter or longer than usual to reach the chosen closing date. And changing the closing date during the company’s life mechanically produces a financial year of a different length — a decision taken at a shareholders’ meeting, with tax consequences, not a simple setting to adjust.

In Odoo

The closing date is set in the accounting settings, and it determines the periods, the reports, and the locking of entries.

The point not to miss: lock the financial year once the accounts are finalised. As long as it stays open, an entry can still be added or changed in an already-declared period — which is exactly what undermines the evidential value of the accounting entries file.

Common mistakes

  • Defaulting to 31 December out of habit, when the business’s seasonality sometimes points to a better date.
  • Leaving the financial year open after the accounts are finalised: earlier entries become editable again.
  • Treating a change of closing date as a technical setting, when it is a shareholder decision with tax consequences.
